As the temperatures outside nose-dive, so does the moisture levels of your skin. Your skin is all scratchy and itchy, and you feel like this
Well, not all is lost as Ayurvedic skin care remedies can give a rosy glow this cold season. Here are some easy-to-follow winter skin care tips that will get you ready to party!
1. Skin smoothie
Chapped lips and cracked heels mean you need an extra dose of vitamins and minerals. Your skin will thank you for having this yummy smoothie for breakfast. Blend together a ripe banana with half a papaya. Add two tablespoons of honey and you have one delicious drink that will soothe your parched, dry skin. Make this smoothie a must-have in your diet in winter along with nuts and seeds that contain healthy oils.
2. Break out the bottle
We mean a bottle of warming oils such as sesame, mustard or olive. Among Ayurvedic tips for skin care in winter is self-massage or abhyanga (There’s a reason it rhymes with “I’m a stunner”). Give yourself a gentle self-massage before you take a bath. Don’t use harsh soap to remove the oil as soap tends to be drying. A good scrubbin’ with a loofah or body brush can mildly exfoliate and help reveal fresh skin.
3. Moisturize with milk
Winter is a time when Vata dosha is predominant. This cold and airy dosha needs to be warm and grounded. What better way to do this than with a cup of warm milk to end your day? This is a skin elixir that’s great for comforting you and nourishing your skin from within. Drink every night before going to bed.
Add equal parts of milk and water. Mix in 2 crushed cardamom pods, a stick of cinnamon, one whole peppercorn, a dash of nutmeg and turmeric. Boil this mixture, then reduce to medium-low heat and let simmer till it reduces to one cup. Strain and garnish with a few strands of saffron.
4. Glow with aloe
Aloe is one of the best herbs to be used in winter due to its high moisture content. Aloe vera gel can be mixed with almond oil as a body moisturizer. Almond oil is loaded with skin-good vitamins and fatty acids that softens skin and fights free radicals.
5. Steam your skin
Avoid the moisture loss of this drying season with a humidifier. Run a steam-based humidifier in your room at night to keep your skin moisturized throughout the night. You’ll wake up to soft, supple skin in the mornings.
