Kissing Dirty Little Secrets

Okay, so smooching is fun. Who doesn’t like a good make-out sesh? But you would be doing yourself, and your partner some cred by ensuring that your oral care is in good shape. There is a whole lot of bad and nasty germs (not to mention viruses) you can get from a kiss. Here are some of the common and not so common illnesses you can get from kissing (we hope not!).

  • Mono
  • Herpes
  • Cold sores
  • Fevers
  • Blisters
  • Cytomegalovirus
  • Cold and flu
  • Measles
  • German measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Epstein Barr
  • Strep

Although several viruses among the ones mentioned above are highly unlikely to contract just by puckering up. So remain calm and keep smooching. That being said though, here is how these diseases spread from lip to lip.

When you kiss someone, the direct skin-to-skin contact coupled with the transfer of saliva can lead to germs and particulates transferring from person to person. When this happens, direct bacterial particulates as well as blood from an infected person can be transferred to another. This is a short summary of how viruses and disease can spread via kissing.

Now, there are certain ways to ensure that you aren’t putting yourself at added risk while kissing.

  • Avoid kissing someone who is sick.
  • Do not kiss someone with visible open sores.
  • Ensure that you have good oral hygiene at all times.
  • Check your doctors for vaccines as a lot of these can be easily preventable if a vaccine is used early on.

Proper Oral Care

One of the best oral care techniques in Ayurveda is oil pulling. This will not only sterilize your mouth, but strengthen your gums as well. Using sesame oil and oil pulling once a day for about 5 minutes is recommended. Remember proper oral care is just the start, but vigilance here is key.

Make sure you check off the above boxes and snog away!
