How to Eat for Your Dosha

Ayurveda health and beauty is all the rage. Why? Natural, organic and wholesome on the whole is good for you. Sure, but Ayurveda and health delves deeper. There are certain natural biorhythms in the body. Vata (wind), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth) are doshas, or bio-rhythms that make up our constitution. These are ever present in everyone, usually with one or two of them dominating. The way we consume food for our dosha and our lifestyle choices that accompany it can affect the internal balances of each person’s dosha. Take this simple quiz to know your dosha type.

Food for Your Dosha

So what foods should you eat and/or stay away from for your dosha type, what are the best Ayurveda food products?

Symptoms of a Vata Imbalance:

  • Anxiousness
  • Poor sleep
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Susceptibility to viral infections

Foods that are drying or bitter in taste contribute to an imbalance of your Vata dosha, instead consume these:

  • Rice or wheat grains
  • Steamed or boiled vegetables (that are partially broken down)
  • Ripe fruits

Symptoms of a Pitta Imbalance:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Diarrhea
  • Hunger pangs
  • Nightmares

Imbalances in the Pitta dosha can be caused by consuming spicy and/or oily foods, additionally smoking and drinking in excess can also contribute to this. Consume sweet, cooling and dry foods to help balance your dosha.

Have this instead:

  • Boiled or raw veggies
  • Sweet fruits
  • Limit your dairy
  • Wheat and oats
  • Seasonal foods with cumin or turmeric

Symptoms of a Kapha Imbalance:

  • Excessive sleep
  • Weight gain
  • Water retention
  • Poor bowel movement

Consume warm, light, and low-fat foods for your diet.

These include:

  • Steamed or raw veggies
  • Fruits except banana
  • Millet, rye or barley
  • Replace sugar with honey or cinnamon
  • Consume heating spices like ginger, black pepper, etc.

As you can probably tell a lot of the foods overall are similar, but there are certain differences. Like with any healthy diet the same could be said, and that boils down to an individual's dietary allowances. But following a diet based around your dosha can help you get rid of common nuisances and allow natural wellness.
