Ear infections can be downright annoying, especially because the irritation and pain is in a rather hard-to-reach spot. According to Ayurveda, ear infections are usually caused as a result from excess Kapha.
Children especially tend to be prone to ear infections. With the majority of the inner ear being filled with fluid, you may feel additional pressure in the ear after consuming a meal rich in sugar or fat, as this ear fluid becomes congested. In addition, wheat, empty carbs, and dairy are found to create water pressure in the ear; red meat causes buildup of wax.
Sinus congestions can also travel through the Eustachian tube which stops ear drainage, and eventually cause an ear infection.
How to Cure Ear Pain Naturally
Below are some Ayurvedic treatments for ear infection and congestion. Many people try home remedies for ear infection that involve ear candles and putting in liquids and oils which can be dangerous to the ear canal. Here are a few alternate remedies you can try instead:
Gargle: The act of chewing and swallowing aids the disposal of earwax and will clear the middle of the ear, making it beneficial in case of ear infections.
Massage: Place your hands on the cheeks at the jaw joint. Open and close your mouth while massaging the area. Keep the fingers on the neck, right behind the ear lobe. Now, open and close the jaw while massaging the joint. Next, massage the cheek near the tragus (the pointed outer covering in the middle of the ear which covers the ear opening) while simultaneously opening and closing the mouth. Experiment by pulling the ear up, down and sideways.
Nasal Saline Irrigation: Use a Neti pot to eliminate sinus congestion and clear the Eustachian tube.
Onion Remedy: Place half a raw onion on the outside of the ear. You can roast the onion for 30 seconds to reduce the intensity of the onion.
Dietary Rules: Avoid eating salty and sour foods which increase water content in the ears.
Heating Foods: Spicy and warm foods and herbal remedies such as poultices can help to dry the ear.
Ayurvedic Ear Infection Treatment
If you’re looking for an Ayurvedic ear infection treatment, then try the recipe below. While this natural remedy is safe and harmless, be extremely careful when inserting liquids into the ear canal and proceed with caution. You should also avoid using this recipe if you’ve had a middle ear infection in the past, unless it’s been at least two years since the infection was treated and cured. Be extra careful of what you put into your ear if the eardrum is perforated.
Crush five whole cloves of garlic and add them to about 30 ml of coconut oil in a pot. Bring the mixture to a boil on a low flame. Remove from heat and cover. Allow to sit for a couple of hours, then strain the oil and keep it in a glass bottle.
To use, add a few drops of this oil into the ear canal right before bedtime. Repeating this for a couple of nights will resolve the ear wax buildup.
This remedy is quite effective as garlic has natural wax-dissolving properties. In addition, it is antifungal and antibacterial which guards the ear from infections.
