They say a healthy gut is the key to a healthy life. An unhealthy gut can cause many problems including irregular bowel movements and diarrhea. Take a look at what your poop really says about your health.

It’s always best to have at least one regular bowel movement through the day. Not being able to poop through the day can be a starting point to a long chain of irregular stools. That’s a road you don’t really want to go down. Another important factor to consider is that when you poop you should feel like you have emptied your bowels rather than just partially eliminated some waste. Some people end up having 2-3 bowel movements in a day. This can be due to a faster metabolism and good bacteria or dependent on the quantity of food eaten.

If you are regularly faced with constipation, it’s very important to eat foods that improve gut bacteria and bowel movements as this is the body’s only way of toxin elimination. Green leafy veggies like spinach and broccoli are great for constipation.

Shape of Poop

Are you in love with the shape of poop? Okay, we know this can get gross. This is not talked about much but the shape of your poop can actually say a lot about what’s going on in the land down under (your stomach). Well-formed poop is a sign of healthy digestion. It means that your stomach has absorbed all the nutrients from the food and broken it down completely. Take a look at the Bristol stool chart below.

Type 1: Usually hard small balls, difficult to pass. These stools usually pass when constipated.

Type 2: Sausage like and not lumpy

Type 3: Sausage shaped with cracks

Type 4: Snake-like smooth stools

Type 5: Fairly loose, easily passed, blob-like pieces

Type 6: Mushy stool, loose in texture

Type 7: watery, no formed pieces.

Where Should You Be on the Stool Chart?

Types 3 and 4 is the best place to be on the stool chart. It indicates good digestion, healthy gut and complete assimilation of nutrients. It also means your body is working at a good metabolism rate.

If your stools are between a 5 and 6 on a regular basis, you might want to consider it as an indicator that something’s not right. Firstly, go see a doctor. It’s an indicator that your gut bacteria may not be functioning right and your stomach isn’t digesting your food well. To improve stool consistency try consuming bananas, brown rice and apples.
